Top Of The Podium

They did it! The USA men won the gold medal and it was awesome!

Derrick and I arrived early to claim seats for the day. Finals day consisted of a mixed game (USA vs. Australia), women's game (USA vs. Japan) and a men's game (USA vs. Canada).

We got great seats at the very top of the grandstand in the middle. Pays to get there early and have first choice!

Here is the mixed team accepting their medal. They had a dominant game over Australia and ended up winning 17-4 I think.

The women had a heart breaking game against Japan and almost fought back for the win but ended up losing by 1. It was unexpected and hard to watch but a silver medal is still something to be proud of. The women were also the only USA team to win the spirit award.

The men's final was the last of the day. They started with announcing all of the players for both teams and I snuck? sneaked? we'll go with snooked down for a few close ups.

Jack started with a bang and pulled down an impressive grab in the first point, dumped it off, and then caught the first score. We watched back the live stream of this play and our favorite part was the announcer screaming in a British accent "This man is unstoppable!!!"  Here's a photo of that crazy first catch!

The game got pretty heated and both teams were trading points back and forth pretty evenly. The USA team made a couple questionable bids and the Canadian team got pretty riled up about it so they ended up having to take a spirit time out to calm everybody down. I don't think it was un-spirited or foul play, but just over eagerness and excitement on the part of both teams. They were fighting for a gold medal at the world championships, they all wanted to win and it showed. After the spirit time out the game settled down and the USA pulled ahead and won 17-11 over Canada.

All of the flags came out for the closing ceremony and the men's medal ceremony.

Japan took home the bronze.

I believe that we will win! I believe that we will win! I believe that we will win!

Once they finished their final huddle we were finally able to get some time with the champion and get some pictures before he traded all of his jerseys away.

UNC Wilminton representing team USA! Xavier and Jack have been Wilmington teammates for three years and are also Raleigh Flyers teammates. It was fun to have another person to cheer for all week.

Proud parents.

The starting 5.

Raleighwood represent! Raleighwood takes full credit for all of Jack's frisbee accomplishments.

Jersey trading is a big deal here and everybody wanted a USA jersey. Jack is not very good at telling people no so he got completely stripped down of most of his USA swag. Luckily he has an opportunity to order more jerseys to have for himself. This girl remembered and followed him from Nationals, tracked him down, and initiated a trade.

We had to get a picture with Stacy! She played wHagonwell with Derrick and I back in the day and would surely be on Raleighwood if she hadn't moved to Colorado. It was great having her there and catching up! She does all of the awesome USAU write ups on the website so now you can put a face to the articles!

Someone recently asked me about our experience and if it was worth it to go as a spectator. I told him, yes, definitely. I am so glad we went and I wouldn't have changed a thing. I don't know that we will go again in 2 years if Jack makes the team again but it was the experience of a lifetime to have the whole family there and to watch little baby Jackie-poo take home the gold.
